I've been working on building up the base for the Half Ironman at the end of the year. The first stop is a sprint Triathlon in March, and I've just been following my base plan. It seems to be working so far:
As I mentioned it's basically just starting with 2 runs, 2 bikes, and 2 swims per week. At the start of the year I was just following the plan, but I've been augmenting the plan lately. Stickman suggested I start doing some speed work since the triathlon is short one. So instead of the first easy run, I've started doing 5x300s to try to increase my speed a bit - might as well.
I've also, finally, started doing a bit of strength training. Nothing major, just some quick 30 minute session 3 times a week. If you're curious, I am using the book Strength Training for Triathletes.
I am specifically focusing on building my swimming at the moment. I like how the book guides you towards exercises that will help you perform better at the different elements of Triathlon. I can't seem to make myself lift weights for the sake of lifting weights, but if it helps me swim and run… count me in.
I haven't had much anything out of the ordinary to write about, but I did run my fastest 5k to date - 00:25:02. I'll be impressed if I can get that under 20 minutes, but seeing my last one was 00:27:32 I am happy with the trend.
I've also got my eye on a new bike. Fingers and toes.
