You’ve stumbled across my notes of my journey to a full Marathon, a Half Ironman, and beyond.
Over the last few years I’ve worked my way up the running ranks: 5k, 8k, 10k, and 21k (half marathon) and now I’ve made the scary leap to try to tackle a full marathon and, in 2017, a Half Ironman (1.9k swim, 90k bike ride, 21k run).
Sadly, I didn’t start this journal at the beginning of all of this because, to be quite frank, I didn’t think I would get this far.
Being an outcast from an early age, I hadn’t ever exercised. I made a few attempts back in high school, but I wasn’t very good at sport. Instead, like most of my peers, I threw myself into the digital world - into taking things apart, putting them together, and writing code.
After about 15 years of horrible sleep patterns, massive amounts of Jolt cola, drinking coffee by the pot full, eating things that are difficult to even call food, and sitting - oh, the massive amounts of sitting - I decided to make a change.
Weighing in at 104kg (230lbs), I felt sluggish and sick almost all the time. I found myself winded walking up stairs.
I went vegetarian, then vegan, and then plant-based vegan. I lost a lot of weight quite quickly and began to suddenly have energy. I became healthy. Many nagging aliments went away. I started going for walks, and then started the couch to 5k program. It’s been on ward and upward since.
As you might have guessed, I am not an athlete. I don’t care about competition; I don’t care about being better than you. I am not having a midlife crisis where I am trying to relive my childhood - shit, my childhood wasn’t even this awesome! I am simply trying to be the best I can while having fun and doing things I never dreamed I could do.
Hopefully, if you’re at the start of your journey, these pages might clear some of the brush out of your path. A small example that if a fat ass 40+ year old nerd can do it, you can do it too.
Am I Faster Than Professor Zoom?
Yeah, probably. I am a solid middle-of-the-pack athlete. Here are my current personal records:

- 10k - 46m
- Half Marathon - 1h 39m
- Marathon - 4h 08m
- 40k - 1h 26m
- Farthest - 100km
- 1km - 18m
- Sprint - 1h 29m (750 / 20k / 5k - 16m / 41m / 26m)
